Anthropogenic activities disperse trace elements, chemical pollutants, into the environment, endangering both wildlife and human health. Investigations into this contamination within apex raptors, considered sentinel birds, have been conducted extensively by numerous research teams. Nevertheless, substantial data regarding long-term biomonitoring of various trace elements in raptors is scarce. The livers of common buzzards (Buteo buteo) collected from the United Kingdom between 2001 and 2019 were analyzed for the concentrations of 14 essential and non-essential trace elements to investigate potential changes in these concentrations during this period. Additionally, we ascertained the contribution of specific variables in the creation of models for the concentration of elements in tissues. Among the hepatic concentrations of harmful elements in most buzzards, only cadmium levels exceeded the biological significance level, while all others were below this value. Within each year, the concentration of elements, particularly lead, cadmium, and arsenic, in the liver tissues varied markedly on a seasonal basis. The peak of their performance occurred in late winter, and the trough in late summer, copper displaying a contrasting seasonal pattern. Concurrently, lead accumulation in the liver consistently increased over time, signifying a stark contrast with the diminishing trend observed in strontium levels. The concentration of cadmium, mercury, and chromium in the liver increased in line with age, whereas selenium and chromium levels were affected by the biological sex of the individual. The liver's arsenic and chromium content showed regional variability. Prior studies in this area have largely concentrated on the adult population using cross-sectional data, but our understanding of adolescent development and the potential co-occurrence of conditions over time from a more holistic developmental viewpoint is quite limited. This study aimed to empirically examine the connections between adolescent migraine and co-occurring conditions, and to analyze the timing of onset of these conditions across the transition from adolescence to adulthood.
Data originated from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), which investigated adolescents' health-related behaviors and conditions in a school setting. The research undertaking scrutinized data sourced from three waves, including Wave 1 (1994-1995), Wave 4 (2008-2009), and Wave 5 (2016-2018). Parent-reported adolescent migraine status (PR-AdMig) at week 1 was examined alongside 15 self-reported medical conditions (SR-MDs) at weeks 4 and 5. Analyses and graphical presentations were used to find possible links. Adult studies informed our identification of 11 conditions anticipated to be associated with PR-AdMig and four conditions anticipated not to be associated. The analyses were characterized by an exploratory and post hoc methodology.

Saltwater intrusion is a projected consequence of sea level rise (SLR) for coastal regions which hold 25% of the world's population. In consequence, the soil biogeochemistry of non-saline and/or well-drained soils, currently existing, is significantly impacted by saltwater intrusion, raising serious concern. Farmland in extensive broiler-producing regions, where large quantities of manure laced with organic arsenicals were applied for decades, faces the prospect of saltwater intrusion. We investigated the impact of SLR on arsenic speciation and mobility, by using in situ real-time ATR-FTIR spectroscopy to determine the adsorption/desorption mechanisms of As(V) and 4-aminophenylarsonic acid (p-ASA, a poultry feed additive) on ferrihydrite (Fh) in sulfate-containing solutions at different pH values. With decreased pH, the adsorption of As(V) and p-ASA increased, with As(V) showing IR patterns supportive of inner-sphere As-surface complexation. Furthermore, p-ASA displayed the formation of alternative structures, likely hydrogen-bonded As-surface complexes, possibly via outer-sphere interactions, as inferred from our FTIR and batch experiment data. Observing the Fh surface, the addition of sulfate did not prompt the desorption of As(V) or p-ASA, but sulfate adsorption onto the Fh surface was strikingly more pronounced for p-ASA than for As(V).
